Beware Nom De Guerre!
I think I am in love, oh loyal readers! For those of you that know me, I think that you would agree that I am the stereotypical fashion snob; a jaded fashionista. But this week everything changed. I have hope…reason…purpose! Fashion is no longer another decadent outlet that allows me to act out my dreams of one day becoming a drug addicted, oversexed supermodel.
What? Can’t a girl dream? For far too long, I have been less-than-impressed with some of the work produced by the fashion industry’s so-called top designers. And I know I am not the only one. I mean, honestly, could Gucci become ANY more boring? They’re still designing for my grandmother, it would seem. Or…wait…is that cool right now?
Getting back to the new love of my life, I recently discovered a new label that has completely and utterly re-instilled my faith in the fashion industry. They call themselves, ever so cheekily, Nom De Guerre. They are based out of New York City, and they have set tongues ablaze with praise of their most recent collection. According to their website, “Nom de Guerre is a creative collective founded by Holly Harnsongkram, Wil Whitney, Devon Turnbull, and Isa Saalabi. The concept of the collective is to combine basic and diverse influences from art, fashion, and various New York subcultures to create a composite culture and product.”

These mufuckas have some serious street cred, too. Their space is located in the underground, quite literally. At the corner of Broadway and Bleeker streets, there is a non-descript building that is known famously in certain NY circles as the former meeting place of the Black Panther Party. Wait, it gets better! It is comprised of multiple levels, some of which are subterranean, almost reminiscent of escape tunnels and bomb shelters! These fashion terrorists are certainly well poised to capture the minds of the masses with their 2007 signature collection.

And don’t you just love the name Nom de Guerre? It’s fits so well with their art-house revolutionary fashions! Wikipedia defines “nom de guerre” as a pseudonym adopted by resistance fighters, terrorists and guerillas. Their utilitarian, military inspired garb was one of the most exciting collections recently seen at New York Fashion Week. Our friends over at frillr.com have captured some fresh runway videos, so be sure to check them out. I am holding the following pictures hostage until they send me some gear to review. The revolution has begun, and the fashion world will never be same. Resistance is fertile, comrades! Beware Nom de Guerre!
